12 Pet-Friendly Indoor Plants



These 12 indoor plants are considered pet-friendly for dogs and cats by the ASPCA. This is a non-exhaustive list. Know that if your furry friend ingests even a "pet-friendly" plant, it can cause them to have an upset stomach or vomit.


12 Pet-Friendly Houseplants:


  • Maidenhair fern: loves indirect, bright sunlight indoors with moist, well-draining soil; grows to be 1-2' x1-2'

  • Orchid: loves mild, warm, slightly humid environments; needs well-draining soil; matures to be 1-3' tall x 6-12" wide

  • Boston fern: loves indirect sunlight indoors with moist, well-draining soil; matures to be 2-3' x 2-3'


  • Bromeliad: loves bright, indirect sunlight indoors, well-draining soil, matures to be between 6"-2.5' x 6"-12", depending on the variety


  • Blue Echeveria: loves bright sunlight indoors, needs very little water; plant in succulent soil that is well-draining; matures to be 2-24' tall x 2-12' wide, depending on the variety


  • Prayer plant: loves partial sunlight indoors (doesn't need bright, indirect sun), needs moist, well-draining soil; matures to be 6-12 inches tall and wide


  • African Violet: loves partial sunlight indoors, needs well-draining, moist soil (try not to get water on the leaves); matures to be 6-9" tall and wide

  • Parlor palm: loves bright, indirect light, needs a peat-based soil; matures to be 6' tall x 3' wide


  • Cast Iron plant: loves indirect, morning sunlight indoors, needs well-draining soil; matures to be 2-3' tall x 1-2' wide


  • Staghorn fern: loves partial sunlight indoors, can be grown in a pot or attached to a wood piece (see video cover above); matures to be 2-3' x 2-3'


  • Christmas Cactus: loves partial sunlight, needs moist, well-draining soil; matures to be 6-12" tall x 12-24" wide


  • Spider plant: loves partial sunlight indoors (can tolerate lower light), needs well-draining soil; matures to be 1-2' tall and wide
